Cielo

$140,00

Cielo is based upon the Mexican celebration the Day of the Dead (Dia de los Muertos). The bones are all appliquéd to the surface of doll. Cielo’s face is heavily embroidered, much like how sugar skulls are decorated for the holiday. There is a large flower, smaller flowers and vines decorating her face. Her skirt has a double-headed serpent appliquéd and embroidered onto the skirt. Cielo has an embroidered pair of pantalettes and an underskirt on to complete her outfit. I created Cielo when I found myself reminiscing about the wonderful Day of the Dead celebrations in Albuquerque, NM. There may be some people who find Cielo somewhat scary. But I find comfort in her, and in the roots of the Day of the Dead celebration. It doesn’t celebrate death, it honors the lives of all of the family that has come before us. Their lives made our lives possible and that deserves respect and honor.
