Neilikka lives in a large greenhouse behind an old-style house. The greenhouse is a wonderful place for Neilikka, it’s warmer than the outdoors all year round! This means that Neilikka doesn’t have to spend as much time hibernating as her fellow Kukka Sprites. The greenhouse where she lives has citrus trees and pomegranate trees. The man and woman who live in the house have set up a table with chairs and sometimes they have meals in the greenhouse. Because the man and woman take such good care of their plants, Neilikka doesn’t have a lot of actual work to do. Most of her work consists of pulling unwanted insects off of the plants and taking them outside the greenhouse. Neilikka watches the man and woman as they care for the different plants so she can learn how to take care of the plants herself. She’s even reading the books about plants that they leave in the greenhouse. During the coldest part of the winter, Neilikka hibernates in a warm little niche close to the heating elements of the greenhouse. Last winter, she took a book with her, and when she woke up here and there, she would read a little, then go back to sleep. The book made a lovely bed on which to sleep too!

Kukka (Koo-kah) is the Finnish word for flower. There really isn’t a good translation for the word sprite though. A sprite can be described using the words elf or fairy, but these dolls are not elves or fairies. They are sprites. These dolls are more like a guardian or a spirit, than an elf or a fairy. For me, the only word that described them was sprite, so I decided to call these dolls Kukka Sprites.

Neilikka (NEH-leek-kuh) is Finnish for Carnation.
