Voikukka lives along a stretch of road, far outside of town. She can see a farm with cows when she climbs to the top of the humans posti box. Voikukka’s job taking care of the dandelions begins in early spring. She needs to make sure that the dandelions grow big and strong, so the honey bees, bumble bees and butterflies have something to eat when they wake from their long winter slumber. Many is the time that she has gently picked up a hungry bee and placed it in dandelion after dandelion, letting it eat its fill. Voikukka loves the bumble bees the most. They’re just so rolly-poly and fuzzy! She loves the hearing them buzz and bonk their way through the flowers. Like her fellow Kukka Sprites, Voikukka hibernates throughout the long, cold winter in a safe, warm place, waiting for the sun, flowers and bees to return.

Kukka (Koo-kah) is the Finnish word for flower. There really isn’t a good translation for the word sprite though. A sprite can be described using the words elf or fairy, but these dolls are not elves or fairies. They are sprites. These dolls are more like a guardian or a spirit, than an elf or a fairy. For me, the only word that described them was sprite, so I decided to call these dolls Kukka Sprites.

Voikukka (Voy-kuu-kuh) is Finnish for Dandelion.
